Guy Haley Biography
Guy Haley was born in 1973, in Halifax, United Kingdom. The first book he ever wrote was Tales of Infinite Adam, which was never published. As a child, he watched Star Wars, and was hooked on movies. At the age of 7, he got The Hobbit as a gift from his parents, and they read it for him until he could read it on his own. Once he finished it, he went on a reading rampage of the family science fiction book collection.
During his school years, he would write short stories, from as an early age as 10.
He first got the idea that he wanted to become a writer when he was 18. He always loved reading books, and he thought that writing as a career would be pretty easy and fun. He really pushed himself especially after a teacher mocked him for wanting to become an author. Despite the negative teacher’s attitude, eventually he became one.
At some point, Guy lived in Poland where he picked up the language enough to be able to read books in Polish. In addition, he also speaks Swedish,
In 1997, Guy became a journalist and magazine editor for WhiteDwarf. He also started to work for SFX, where his first writing was a review of the radio edition of American Werewolf in London by Dirk Maggs. Guy remained there for over six years.
In an interview, Guy Haley mentioned that he got the idea for writing his second series, Dreaming Cities after watching The Walking Dead. Before that, he never liked anything with zombies, but after The Walking Dead and the movie 28 Days Later came out, he realized that there is some really good material out there in the genre. While Watching the show, he asked himself why they never made any armor to stop the zombies from biting the body. Also swords, as primitive as one could make them, would help against the hoards.
Once the zombie apocalypse ended, what would happen next? And the books pick up from the ashes of that new civilization.
For his Warhammer 40K books, he has always read a lot of books in the series, also by authors like Dan Abnett and Chris Wraight. He likes to immerse himself in the Warhammer lore, and he sprinkles his books with bits and pieces of what he’s learned over the years in the genre.
So far, Guy Haley is probably one of the most prolific Games Workshop Black Library novels centering around the 40K science fiction games. With numerous books and countless short stories (in an interview he mentioned that he doesn’t even remember how many short stories he has written over the years), he is definitely an author who wrote probably most of the books in the series, with several novels, novellas, and short stories written every year.
Praise for Guy Haley
Reality 36 presents fascinating characters in a very believable future. (Mike Resnick)
It’s an actual glimpse into the future as much as it’s a mystery yarn and an action thriller. Isn’t that what Science Fiction is all about? While Robopocalypse is this year’s hottest robot release… Reality 36 is a superior novel in almost every way. (Staffer’s Musing on Reality 36)
Haley’s wit is both laugh-out-loud and sharp as a sword. (John Whitbourn)
The worlds Haley builds are easy to buy into and the plot is so compelling that it would be hard not to be swept into its pull. (LA Book Examiner)
The characterization is flawless and the author’s ability to humanize an AI construct while retaining the characteristics of an artificial being is nothing short of brilliant, even the minor characters are perfectly drawn… (SF Book Reviews)
Guy Haley is a force for good, a hidden gem of British SF (Paul Cornell)
Champion of Mars celebrates all that is best in SF. Simply put, Guy Haley is a very good writer, with an infectious love for sci-fi that shines off every page. (The Guardian)
