Kelley Armstrong Biography
Kelley Armstrong was born in 1968, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, as the oldest of four siblings. She loved reading horror and fantasy novels, writing stories from a very young age, all on the rather morbid side. Most of the girls featured in her early stories were all undead, and the dolls were evil. This love for the supernatural remained with her forever, which translated later into numerous urban fantasy stories.
As a child, she never thought of a career in writing. In her family, writing was considered more of a hobby than something one could earn a full-time income with.
During high school, she also grew fond of computers. She attended The University of Western Ontario, from where she graduated with a degree in psychology. However, soon she realized that if she got a job as a counselor, she wouldn’t have enough time writing. So she next went to study computer programing at Fanshawe College, which allowed her more time to write books.
The first Kelley Armstrong book published in 2001 after it was sold in 1999 under the title Bitten, a title that many people know as the famous urban fantasy TV show with Laura Vandervoort in the role of Elena Michaels. The series was based on the author’s Otherworld series that took the world back in the early 2000s by storm.
The order of the Kelley Armstrong books in her series is best followed, as each story is closely related to the other – with the exception of her Darkest Power and Darkness Rising, which are set in the same universe but featuring completely different characters. While the books do diverge in that various books are told from other characters’ points of view and are set in a wider supernatural world, eventually, they do come together again, and readers might feel left out of the loop if they read them out of order.
In 2007, the Canadian author Kelley Armstrong switched gears from fantasy to crime mystery with Exit Strategy, the first book in the Nadia Stafford series, followed by City of the Lost, in 2016, as the first in the Rockton book series.
Several of the Kelley Armstrong novels were #1 New York Times bestsellers, including No Humans Involved and The Awakening.
Many of her urban fantasy books are mostly set in contemporary America in urban places, but include a large number of supernatural beings, such as witches, werewolves, necromancers, vampires, sorcerers, ghosts, shamans, and even demons. While these series are part of the fantasy genre, they also include elements of mystery with characters investigating issues presented or trying to find answers to unsolved questions. This is a world where the paranormal coexists with the normal.
In an interview, Kelley Armstrong mentioned that the idea for Bitten came to her from an X Files episode which dealt with werewolves. As she needed a story for the next writers’ group meeting, after watching X Files, she didn’t like the show’s take on werewolves being horrible beats with a hunger for blood, so she created a short story about a female werewolf, which would eventually become Elena Michaels in a full-length book.
It took the author 6-7 years to finalize the actual story because she was working full-time, had a family to take care of, and also because she was often told that books featuring werewolves would not sell well. As a huge folklore fan, the author took various bits and pieces that made sense out of the lore and put them together to create the world of Elena, and the rest of the werewolves in her books.
The author gets her ideas for stories from all sorts of places. For example, for Rockton, she got the idea for a town for people to escape to after she talked with her agent who mentioned to her that every year there are so many people missing that could fill in an entire town. This got her thinking about an actual town that could house all those who wanted to simply disappear.
In 2018, Kelley Armstrong returned to the world of the Women of the Otherworld book series with a new young-adult series, this time featuring the twins of Elena and Clayton.
Praise for Kelley Armstrong
It’s terrific. The heroine is the most appealing I have come across in ages. It’s clever, quirky, hip and funny, skating between genres with style and grace. More please! (Joanne Harris on Bitten)
[This] might be just the welcome diversion you need. (Charlaine Harris on Bitten)
Loki’s Wolves has everything–a fast-paced, exciting plot, endearing and honest characters, Norse mythology with a contemporary twist, and plenty of heart. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Matt, Laurie, and Fen (Ally Condie)
The prolific Armstrong is an adept storyteller . . . who makes the rather out-there idea of a small, protected community full of people with things to hide seem not only plausible but entirely believable. Fans of the author who have not yet checked out the Rockton novels should do so, pronto. (Booklist)
Action, danger, supernatural secrets, and a hint of romance–Armstrong’s world is one in which trusting the wrong person can have dire consequences. You’ll be desperate for a sequel. (Melissa Marr on The Summoning)
Smart, tough and relentlessly fast. Hard to put down. (Shari Lapena on Wherever She Goes)

I haven’t read a book by you I don’t like. I eagerly await Nadia, or Rockton, or Cainsville, or Otherworld. You are truly talented!
Robert Chambers says
I don’t know if you will read this, Ms. Armstrong, but I just finished Watcher in the Woods, having experienced all the previous ones in the Rockton series and placed a hold with my library for the subsequent ones. I felt compelled to express my appreciation. Your skill at crafting a tale is impressive. You have an admirable economy of detail, conveying just enough information about settings and characters to make a vivid impression. Your style and choices as a storyteller make your tales a delight, particularly in audiobook form. Because of time constraints I must listen to my books while I do routine tasks, and I am sometimes vexed by “clever” authors trying to do something impressive by jumping about chronologically, as well as mystery writers who heap on a multiplicity of characters and subplots in otder to obscure the identity of the who that dunnit. I believe that a really good author makes a story interesting, even if one already knows how it will turn out, through characterization, humor, and unobtrusive style. I commend you on your skill and thank you for the enjoyment you have afforded me.

The Rockton Novels are the Best!!! In a LARGE part because Therese Plummer is a phenomenal narrator!!! Need to update this site – only lists 5 in this series. Book 6 – A Stranger in Town and then Book 7 gets released on audio 2/22/22.
Madeline DiComo says
Please write more Rockton books. I am addicted to your Rockton, Casey Duncan books. I listen to them on audio tape from the library and will finish Book 6 tonight; finishing all six novels in 4 weeks (4/24/21 – 5/15-21) My 80 year old eyes could never read all of them so the audio tapes are a godsent. The actor who reads them is excellent! The reader is very important. I have put back books that seemed to tell a good story, but the reader was so dull I could not listen beyond the first chapter
Thank you for bringing us great writing and stories.
